this. as we saw play out on national tv, scott. >> we did, raj. lots of people brought up it technology back during the 2009 inauguration. today it was even more prevalent. you could follow the inauguration on twitter and facebook like you might follow the play-by-play of a sporting event. one bay area blogger tells us that's both helpful and a little too easy. well, the first family was xwhun kating via social media, doing the same in a much quieter place, sending out tweets like this one about how some day they'll tell their 3-year-old daughter. >> when i was young, martin luther king's birthday wasn't even honored yet. and so to fast forward to 0 today where not only is his birthday a holiday but a black president is being sworn in for the second time. i was just like, this is way too

information and short soundbites can we connect america's children to the important parts of our history. >> reporter: there was so much social media it went down after the inauguration ended. twitter says there were more th than 1 million themed tweets sent out, more than back in 2009. >> mr. obama also made history today by becoming the first president to 0 ever mention gay rights in an inaugural speech. >> our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. >> gay rights advocates are praising the president's speech, but critics including brian brown, president of the national organization for marriage, says he took offense to some of the

president's remarks today. he says it was inappropriate when the president mentioned the 1969 stonewall riots in new york city which launched the gay rights movement and linked them to other civil rights struggles. and now that the work is over as you saw a few minutes ago it is party time. coming up we'll get back and give you another insider's look at some of the festivities and preparations to make it happen. the first time in 18 years the 49ers are back in the super bowl. if you were around here in the mid-'90s and 1980s, you know how wild the bay area gets with 49ers fever. this time something totally new for the 49ers and the nfl. you probably know by now, sibling rivalry, two brothers coaching against each other in the super bowl. we have extensive coverage tonight of the super bowl. jim kozemore in our newsroom. we begin with arturo santiago with the family angle. >> reporter: you could say john harbaugh has had bragging rights since they beat the 49ers on thanksgiving day in 2011.

now that very same sibling rivalry will be played out on an even bigger stage, the super bowl. >> i feel like there's no losing in that family. and i'm sure the brothers feel the same way. but one of them's going to win. >> reporter: tina knows a little something about sibling rivalry, the mother of twin boys who are now in college who have been competing against each other from day one. >> they don't look to other people as competition. they look at each other and they say, okay, can i beat you? and then once i beat you, i can do whatever to get the next group of guys. bring them in. >> reporter: psychologist dr. marc steinberg says it's important for parents to treat their children according to individual personalities, skills, and accomplishments. and to not foster a sense of entitlement when it comes to rivalries. >> parents get tempted to say, no, i love you the same. you're just as good as. and the truth is i love you the same, maybe on some days, maybe

it took three hours but the chp has reopened all lanes of southbound 880 after a big rig jackknifed around 2:00 this

afternoon, the resulting backup more than a mile long. you see our nbc helicopter on the scene. no other vehicles were involved thankfully in the crash. because the truck was leaking diesel fuel, the right three lanes had be to be shut down in order to get cleaned up. >> a tense moment for a surfer stranded off ocean beach today and all caught on camera. that surfer got stuck on a rock near cliff house restaurant at 11:30 in the morning. you can see him there with his board. he climbed up several feet away from the pounding surf and just waited for help. the coast guard did come to the rescue. two swimmers paddled out to the rock and then the surfer climbed down and after a long pause jumped. paddled into calmer water with where a boat picked him up. the search continues for the body after san francisco man who drowned in hawaii. two men from san francisco, 46-year-old adam griffith and 47-year-old brian baker were on the island of kauai. they went climbing on a rocky

coastal area when a wave pulled baker out to sea. griffith jumped in to help and they both drowned. crews did recover griffith's body on saturday morning. they are still searching for baker's body. new conflict to report tonight involving the leadership of the california national guard and its largest union. it follows a series of critical investigations by our investigative unit and with knbc our sister station in los angeles into the culture behind the gates of the california national guard. our chief investigative report er tony kovaleski joins us. >> reporter: what he described as a lack of action by general david baldwin. we conducteded on and off camera interviews with two dozen members of the guard. the issue is the guard's failure to handle complaints involving sexual harassment, racism, and retaliation. last february the guard's largest union supported the appointment of general david

ranieri, our meteorologist, and talk about the next couple of days. it's been glorious. >> low to mid-70s near the bay and then parts of the east bay you were colder. some rain on the doppler radar. more on that coming up. a look at today's highs. we stayed with the upper 50s back in the east bay but look at this down in the south bay unreal. ten degrees above average. 69 in gilroy and 70 in los gatos. numbers are dropping off but it's not cold at this point. 51 in livermore right now. let's take you outside to our live hd sky camera network. in san jose we have the haze with us but the air quality is going to to improve dramatically the next two days. we get these changes in here and up in emeryville storm-free conditions now but also rain drops expected on the bay bridge which looks very brilliant tonight. the next storm system is 700 to 800 miles out here offshore. the strongest part is way off to the north so we're going to get

grazed by the bottom edge that will help push the high pressure out of the way with the mild air we've had the past four days. so the largest changes we'll experience will be patchy fog, a chance here of showers for the entire bay area and then also about a 5 to 15 degree temperature drop in that forecast. tomorrow temperatures will modera moderate. down with low to mid-50s by the afternoon for the coast to the interior valleys and cloud cover increasing by the afternoon. we'll start off clear but once again by the afternoon hours, those clouds increase. we will have more on our chances of rain throughout the next seven days coming up next in the forecast. >> thanks a lot. we'll see you in a bit. still ahead, the warning going out to thousands of patients at a bay area hospital. >> and can using aspirin impact your eyesight? about the frequent use. stay with us.

the families of tens of thousands of patients have been notified tonight.

the medical information is a compromised because of a laptop. administrators at the children's hospital at stanford report that a laptop was stolen from the doctor's car on january 9th. now the medical information on the computer was postally historic and related to past care and research. it didn't have any financial information on there. still, are the hospital and stanford school of medicine are notifying 57,000 patients. so far no information has been accessed since that theft. this week cal it trans crew will begin replacing the fenders on the western tower. those fenders were destroyed when a ship sideswiped the bridge back on january 7. officials say the actual pier itself was not damaged because the fender system absorbed the impact as it was designed to do. the repair work is expected to last about four and a half months. the ntsb and the coast guard say it could take months to determine the actual cause of the crash. >> the union representing state

engineers is questioning whether there's enough oversight on california's planned high-speed rail line. plans for the first 30-mile segment call for the contractors to design and build a project as well as hire inspectors to test it. state engineers to high speed rail meets independent inspectors on site to make sure everything is done correctly. the high-speed rail authority says there will be many levels of inspection they can consult cal trans. >> putting an end to partisan squabbling. the president uses this historic day to forge a path for the future. y and i'm janelle wang. a hostage standoff that killed three americans. and preparing like any british soldier, so what happened on his tour of duty in afghanistan he just wrapped up? next in "world tonight." and drinks on the house. the airline that took on and is now on the hook for millions of free drinks.

second term. senior republicans say they hope president obama has opened the door today to more cooperation on capitol hill. live from the white house, i'm steve handelsman, nbc bay area news. okay, steve, thank you. our political analyst larry gerston is in washington tonight. we chatted with him a short while ago about the significance of the day and night. i'm guessing this is going to be brief, you're heading out to the inaugural balls. who really is part of the balls tonight? >> reporter: there are two major balls tonight. one is the military ball honoring all of those folks in uniform and anyone in uniform can get into that ball. it's a big deal for that reason and the president will spend some time there. then at the convention center right below the inaugural ball and it will be divided into four parts depending upon what kind of ticket you have but the

president expected to stop in all the different areas and his wife, of course. spend some time with folks. tremendous entertainment all night long. i think it goes until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning and should be quite an evening, an awful lot of wonderful people around here showed up, all the who's who will be at that ball both politically and folks in politics, no doubt about it. >> whatever the way you lean politically, today republican, democrat, in between, whatever it is, it's usually such a big day for america and you see so many good feelings going on. what was the biggest takeaway from you this inauguration day? >> reporter: there were 700,000 people, raj, at this event. it took forever to get in and yet they were all in awe of what they saw. they had choirs singing, poetry read. they had all these things and the president came up at the end and gave his speech. really it was about inclusion, how every individual, the

collective, the public good, if you will, all those things that he thought were important whether it was immigration, gun control and dealing with the debt, you name it. it was much more than that. it was sort of a feel good. i'll tell you one thing that surprised me and that was the cheers that some of the democratic leaders received and the jeers that minority leader speaker john boehner received along with a couple of other leaders, republican leaders in the house. it was out of place for this kind of a feelgood event, but, nonetheless, you could see the politics even on a day like today. you could see the politics never too far from where everybody else was. >> it seemed president obama spoke with a little more of a swagger than he usually does, and that's because he doesn't have to worry about re-election anymore? >> reporter: it's because he doesn't have to worry about re-elected. it's because he feels he's won the last two or three fights, and he has. including the raising of the

income taxes and, of course, the delaying of the debt, another three months before they have to vote on that again, so he's feeling pretty good. he feels he has the republicans on a limb. i think you're right. he did speak with a little bit more of an attitude, if you will, today. not too much but a little bit more. he's trying to tell people, look, we're going to get out there and pound the pavement on what we think is important and we're counting on you, you the public, the voters, to get your members of congress in line with us. it was in that sense a bit of a campaign speech along with this all inclusive remembrance of what the inauguration is like. >> a dapper larry gerston. the night is young for you in washington. enjoy it. it was a remarkable day from the fashion to the parades and of course you can watch all of the festivities right on our website at nbcbayarea.com. from the u.s. to the world, help from the inside, chilling new details now on the deadly hostage standoff in algeria. janelle wang is here with our

world update. helping the al qaeda linked military lay out the facilities, disguise the uniforms when they seized the refiny. they also brought ex mostive experts to rid the facility. algeria special forces tried to launch a rescue but ended in a blood bath. special forces killed 29 militants and captured three alive but not before the militants killed at least 38 hostages including three americans who have been identified as victor lovelady and frederick, both from texas, and gordon lee rowan, whose hometown has not been released yet. five remain missing and are presumed dead tonight. >> machine gun fire. sometimes rocket like and sometimes quiet. >> dozens of foreigners did

survive including seven americans. as for the rest, some were canadian and north african. french forces are now in control of the key city after launching a series of air strikes forcing the militants to flee. france deployed troops to the west african nation last week in an attempt to weed out the militants trying to take over mali. seven other countries including the u.s. are providing statistical support. the suspect in a brutal gang rape and murder of a medical student appeared in court today. five of the six suspects are in a special fast track court set up specifically for this case after it sparked outrage across the country. a sixth suspect is being prosecuted in juvenile court. they accused of gang raping a 22-year-old on a public bus. she died of massive internal injuries. prosecutors plan to push for the death penalty. in syria today the government launched air strikes across the country in rebel held neighborhoods. no word on a number of

casualties but the u.n. estimates 50,000 syrians have been killed in the 22-month civil war. over in afghanistan the afghan government is denying the findings of a u.n. report relessed just yesterday. the report said one-third of the prisoners recently transferred to afghan control of being tortured and said afghan spy agency is operating secret facilities to avoid international monitors. prince harry has wrapped up his latest tour of duty in afghanistan and is on his way back home to england now. the 28-year-old reportedly took out enemy taliban fighters while protecting british and nato soldiers. prince harry flew apache helicopters in the helmand province in southern afghanistan during his 20 weeks there. he was apparently treated just like one of the guys. when asked about his sister-in-law's pregnancy he said he's thrilled and can't wait to be an uncle. raj? >> thank you, janel. still searching for answers about the boeing dreamliner. among the problems, a fire on a

flight that landed in boston earlier this month. u.s. safety investigators have ruled out excess voltage and are looking at the battery's charger and the boeing 747 auxiliary power unit. the prolonged investigation continues a ripple effect in dreamliner aircraft across the world really. japan has canceled another 200 flights between now and next tuesday and that includes the flights from the san jose airport. >> southwest wants to buy you a drink, if you were a passenger in 2010. they have long awarded drink vouchers for its best customers. the airline decided the vouchers would be good only on the day issued. one had 45 coupons and sued. as a result a settlement. southwest has agreed to issue replacement vouchers good for a year to customers who produce expired coupons. customers get $5 drink tickets, the attorney who will present

in health matters the number of children diagnosed with adhd

increased significantly over the past decade. new kaiser permanente study showed a 25% increase in adhd cases from 2001 to 2010. researchers looked at medical records and more than 800,000 ethnically diverse children. black children saw the biggest increase in 70%. the sharp increase has growing awareness about the disorder. >> obesity isn't the only potential toll dinner from the drive-through may have on health. more than 500,000 kids and more than 50 countries which link fast food to severe asthma, hayfever and eczema. kids who eat fast food three or more times a week had a 30% increased risk in disease severity. asthma, eczema and hayfever is the immune system overreacting to things it should be ignoring. kids who ate fruit at least three times a week were much

healthier. people who use aspirin on a regular basis may have an increased risk for blindness. researchers in australia studied aspirin users over a 15-year period. they found some who used aspirin regularly once or more a week had a higher risk for macular degeneration. more work needs to be done and patients should not stop taking the drug. >> you haven't been taking an aspirin, have you? >> i can't read sometimes. >> it's monday. a slow start. it's suppose d to be a holiday. we're not supposed to be here. >> i know, i know. we're doing good here. we do have some changing weather as we head throughout the next couple of days. we'll let you know about a 10 to 15 degree trop in temperatures and rain return in the full forecast. cold and rain? no. big news in the nba with the sacramento kings. plus, the warriors pull off a little afternoon delight. but all the talk is about the

literally. hundreds of people rode the annual freedom train today. nbc bay area's joe rosato jr. showed us what made today's march even more special. >> reporter: 25 years ago as the freedom train left san jose for san francisco, 7-year-old melissa cooke was aboard with her grandmother. >> my grandmother, she's always made sure that she's kept us up to date on what's going on in the world. >> reporter: today cooke returned to the train for the first time since. she wanted to experience the celebration of martin luther king jr. as an adult while honoring her grandma. >> a lot of what she did for me, opening my eyes to the world around me made me the person i am today. >> reporter: for many this is about remembering the people who paved the way and no one, they said, has as wide a path as dr. king. >> he was surrounded with by violence, but he always would

opt for -- >> reporter: honoring king in the civil rights movement has taken place more than 30 years buts as the train reached san francisco there was an extra meeting today because it coincided with the second inauguration of president obama. >> so a lot of people, they never expected to have an african-american president. it's a good experience. >> reporter: adrienne and anthony murray brought their two daughters to take part in the march. >> i think it's important that they understand the responsibility that they have to carry this on, martin luther king can was for equality. i want them to stand up for something. >> we shall overcome. >> reporter: the murphys joined hundreds of people filing into the san francisco streets. many were filled with stories, parents and grandparents who weren't allowed to vote. >> and now we are here parading to let them know that we are alive, we are good folks and we

we definitely need a few more storm systems in here throughout february so we can keep things looking just as great as they are right now. we have some colder weather developing in the north bay. mid-50s in the south bay, it's not too cold. let's take you outside to our live hd sky camera. there's that layer of haze. it's been there the last seven days. if you're sick of it, your allergies are sick of it. you've been coughing, your eyes watering. some much larger numbers that you will like by wednesday and thursday and you can even see some of the haze there in san francisco with the slight offshore wind today. a lot of sunshine for those of you that did have off for martin luther king day. now to the larger changes offshore. 500 to 600 miles we have our next storm system. it's very impressive looking, tapping into a lot of moisture. the center of low pressure, unfortunately, will miss us. so we're out of the zone of the heaviest rainfall. as the system gets closer, it's

going to break apart. so namely for the bay area, it's about the cooldown the next three to four days and then we'll throw in the chance here of some showers. so let's get you into the time line here as we head throughout 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. cld cover will increase for the entire bay area up into s santa rosa, novato, pleasanton, even san jose by the evening hours. and that cloud cover will continue into the overnight hours. we'll start to introduce that first chance of showers by 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning on wednesday, namely for the north bay and then watch what happens on the computer models. we advance this into the afternoon. it has a hard time pushing this rain down into the south bay and the east bay. to the best chaps right now, those showers up into the north bay and we'll struggle to get any kind of wet with weather down here throughout the rest of the region. otherwise tomorrow starting off 31 in santa rosa, the same you've had the past three to five days, patchy fog and areas of patchy frost, temperatures in the low 30s. some mid to upper 30s. san jose at 39.

how about your tuesday? a lot of you heading back to work. we will have a lot of sunshine. it will be hazy. cloud cover increasing throughout the day. still the warmest spot, a slight message, that's all you need and we'll have 70 in santa cruz. a huge departure in the east bay. upper 50s and also low 60s back into the tri-valley. san francisco also up into santa rosa. your three-day forecast, we'll keep it dry for tomorrow. introduce that chance of showers on wednesday and then another chance coming in that forecast as we head into saturday. neither storm is very strong at this point but it is going to change things up quite a bit and most of all, you'll need to bring those jackets out from low 70s at the coastline, santa cruz mountains today to upper 50s and low 60s by friday, saturday, and also on sunday. i'm going to be happy to get those cooler temperatures in here because my allergies of the air quality has been off the hook. >> our whole newsroom.

to speak on the phone. they probably won't talk until they meet up in new orleans because they're both so busy prepping their teams for the super bowl. jim harbaugh also confirmed that they will be making the trek to new orleans but, jim, the jury is still out on which team the parents will be cheering for. >> great job out there. nba news, a group out of seattle led by san francisco businessman chris hanson has agreed to purchase the sacramento kings. if the deal is approved by the nba board of governors the kings will play in seattle next season, going back to the name sonics. they held that name until 2008. sacramento will get a chance to address the board of governor's meeting but the deal is expected to go through for seattle. a little monday matinee. that is the three ball and then more curry.
